Controller (Exempt)

Department: ACCOUNTING
Location: HONOLULU, HI

About the Role

The Carpet Shoppe, Inc. (TCS) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead and oversee the company’s financial operations. This key leadership role is responsible for budgeting, planning, accounting, payroll, collections, IT, and HR functions, while ensuring compliance with internal controls, regulatory standards, and organizational goals.

The Controller will serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and Board of Directors, providing accurate financial insights, guiding investment and planning decisions, and implementing policies to safeguard the company’s assets. This includes preparing financial reports for the Board of Directors of TCS, Inc. and presenting them at quarterly Board meetings. This role requires strong technical expertise, strategic thinking, and proven leadership in financial management.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Strategy

  • Direct the company’s financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and investment activities.
  • Provide financial analysis to support decision-making in areas such as capital investments, pricing, and contract negotiations.
  • Establish and monitor short- and long-term financial objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Review financial performance and identify opportunities for cost savings, revenue growth, and operational improvements.

Accounting & Reporting

  • Oversee preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and forecasts.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Review financial details from past, present, and forecasted operations to support strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate with external auditors to provide documentation and support for annual audits.
  • Confirm accuracy and oversee filing of quarterly and annual reports with regulatory agencies.
  • Provide financial reports to the Board of Directors of TCS, Inc. and present the financial report at quarterly Board meetings.

Leadership & Oversight

  • Manage and mentor employees responsible for accounting, financial reporting, payroll, billing, collections, HR, and IT functions.
  • Identify and implement training programs to strengthen team knowledge and capabilities.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure operational integrity.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership and business unit managers to support financial and operational success.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Maintain knowledge of organizational procedures, accounting standards, and federal/state regulations.
  • Ensure company compliance with reporting, filing, and audit requirements.
  • Advise business units on accounting and budgeting policy implementation.

Other Duties

  • Participate in special projects, analyses, or initiatives as assigned.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Prolonged periods of desk/computer work with ability to lift up to 15 lbs.

Desired Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting/finance experience required.
  • CPA designation highly preferred.

Skills & Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong math, accounting, and analytical skills with a high level of accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and accounting/ERP software, with the ability to quickly learn and use the RFMS (POS) system effectively.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds as needed and sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

Location

This is an in-person position based on the island of Oahu (County of Honolulu), Hawaii. While we welcome applicants from all locations, candidates must be available to work on-site in Oahu and required to work in the office on a regular weekly basis. This position may require travel offsite for events, meetings, and training.

Compensation and Benefits

This a full-time “at-will” position working at least 40 hours per week.

The salary range for this role is $120K to $140K is based on market data and the organization’s compensation philosophy. Our offer will be within the range as required by certain state laws and individual salary offers will depend on and may vary with location, relevant education, knowledge, skills, and experience. We also offer comprehensive employee benefits.
